[ inaudible ] >> -- back to a landfill in the east bay. they are searching for the body of a man believed to be the 5th victim of last week's deadly rampage. kraig deb brois live in pittsburgh with all the details. >> good morning, dave, day 4 of that search begins in about thee hours from now. 35-year-old frederick salas has been missing since late august. police believe he is in a landfill here in pittsburgh. >> it is tedious, very tedious and time-consuming. >> reporter: police have marked off a square acre inside the landfill and using a backhoe to dig through tons of garbage. it includes three police officers and 12 volunteers, looking for a body and not a survivor. police say he was brought here unknowing lee by garbage collectors and they know who is

responsible for his disappearance. the same man police believe murdered four other people and this man. he stole or borrowed one of their cadillacs. >> the debris here is related to the north shore business park. >> reporter: police say so far they have only found a piece of letterhead from the company where he used to work as a security guard. coming back i will tell you why they used a cadaver dog but will for the be using it again. >> last night friends and family members gathered in hercules to remember the four victims of that deadly rampage. >> about 100 people gathered at

market hall in hercules, the grieving family members of his girlfriend were among those attending last night's memorial. a family friend read an emotional statement written by her son. >> we truly love our mom with all our hearts and we know she is looking over us this very moment. >> last night's vigil included one controversial decision. mourners lit 1 canneddal for the accused killer, organizers say their goal was to promote peace and understanding, not to judge the actions of others. >> 5:03. the chp wants to know why a teenage girl jumped out av moving car on a freeway. this happened on eastbound 80 near nearfield. investigators think she may have jumped out after an argument with her boyfriend. the girl was treated for minor

written juries then released to her parents. her boyfriend is in jail this morning, he is facing charges of resisting arrest. concord police are searching for a woman paralyzed from the chest down and confineed to a wheelchair but this morning she is missing. claudine wopping is in concord now with more details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, dave. yes, we do have a bit of a mystery on our happeneds this morning. i did talk to concord police this morning and they are still searching for this one-year-old woman who called 911 for help yesterday. now let's show you a picture of 21-year-old amanda sloane. she is 48 100 pounds and is in a wheelchair paralyzed from the waist down. she called 911 yesterday from the area we are. she told chp she had fallen out of her wheelchair and was having chest pains, they transferred that to the fire department and they went in

search for her but it came up empty. they started a search. they set up a command post and 30 volunteers searched the area. but they have not seen her. it is still unclear if maybe she was able to call someone else for help or somehow was able to get somewhere and get help but certainly at this point police are worried about her and want to make sure she is okay. they are hoping anyone who might have seen her give them a call. we are going to stay on top of this and will keep in contact with the police department and let you know if there is any updates but certainly this is a mystery and they want to make sure she is okay. claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. >> a livermore father is in jail this morning on suspicion of stabbing his 14-year-old son 11 times. it all happened yesterday when 48-year-old gary gomez took his wife, his son and his son's friends fishing open the bet thane reservoir, he became

angry when one of the friends said he had to go home. investigators say when his son interfered gomez stabbed the boy 11 times with a fishing knife. the wife was stabbed also. none of the injuries are life- threatening. san francisco police are investigating the cause of a crash that killed two and injured three. the victims robbie mccam and nick parmento were recent graduates of oceana high. former graduates gathered and brought flowers and shared memories. >> it is heartbreaking for all of us. >> police say they were riding in a honda that turned perpendicular to traffic, when an oncoming toyota carrying three people crashed into the

side of their car. the three victims were transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, police are trying to determine whether alcohol was a factor. >> incredible pictures. it is quiet but you still found a problem. right? >> that's right, on treat boulevard at jones, eastbound treat out towards concord, in fact in concord at jones road there is sean is an accident there. treat boulevard at jones road. chp on the scene there and some people are injured in concord. out to live pictures. westbound 80 that traffic looks okay out to the macarthur maze. no major problems this morning approaching the bay bridge toll mass a, which looks pretty good here coming into san francisco. remember chp is doing maximum enforcement. they actually have more officers on the road over these holiday weekends than they do

normally. some of the officers that are usually riding a desk are out back behind the wheel so just be careful. they are driving the crown victoria. northbound 280 traffic looks good and here comes a car on the lift. it looks like it is going pretty fast. just take it easy out there. 5:07. good morning, mark tamayo. >> good morning. i can count the cars. today the big headline is this, temperatures warming up for today. plenty of sunshine. temperatures 70s to the 90s, easily the warmest day of the upcoming period. with this pattern in place fire danger on the increase. no red flag warnings but still elevated fire danger for the north bay hills and east bay hills for today. current numbers most of the region in the 50s, san francisco 55, livermore though 60, san jose 59, concord 57. high pressure strengthens today, offshore winds and a fog

free forecast. those readings back up into the 70s. look what happens, though beginning tomorrow and also into wednesday, a significant drop off in those readings as the system moves in from the north and temperatures easily by wednesday only in the low 70s and there could be enough moisture with this it is a fairly good bit of drizzle first thing wednesday morning and there is even the slight chance of a few sprinkles scattered around the bay area, only a minimal chance but something we will keep an eye on by midweek, the main impact a significant drop off in those readings at least the couple of days actually be gink tomorrow. warming up by lunchtime. by 4:00 this afternoon sunshine, that sea breeze kicks in, look at these numbers san francisco 82. nasto 90, antioch mid-90s at 95. san jose upper 80s and mountain view tops out at 85. so today pretty warm to hot. you can see what happens though with temperatures really cooling off into tuesday, barely making it to 80 by

welcome back. 13 minutes after 5:00. in iraq american troops were drawn into a gun battle just days after the u.s. combat mission there were supposed to have ended. u.s. troops were called in to provide cover for iraqi soldiers when heavily armed attackers y tacked the base and fought their way inside before being killed. at least 12 people were killed, no u.s. troops were injured. in afghanistan an american member of the force has been killed in fighting in that country and marks the 5th death of u.s. troops in just the first few days of september.

>> the california supreme court will hear arguments on whether the governor has the authority to make state employees take unpaid days off. now on wednesday three lawsuits by state employees will be considered. they claim the constitution does not give the governor the power to order furloughs. the governor, however, says it does, during a fiscal emergency. well, today jerry brown, the democratic candidate for governor, will make a labor day appearance in alameda, shifting his campaign into high gear. the campaign will start airing tv ads for the first time today and at 7:00 this morning brown's campaign says they will make a significant announcement on its website. brown begins this morning with an appearance in los angeles. by lunchtime he will be in sacramento then wind up his day at an event at mlk's shoreline park in alameda set for 4:00. brown's opponent, republican meg whitman, has

been endorsed by the california chamber of commerce's board of directors, however in response the president of the university of california suspended his board membership and the chancellor of the state's community college system resigned from that board. the two men say they are against the chamber getting involved in a political contest. >> some muni passengers could find themselves strainedded at their bus stops next week. someone is circulating a flyer among muni operators. it drghts them to call in sick between september 14th and the 17th. it is unclear exactly who is behind this push for a sickout but the union says it has nothing to do with it. the wording of the flyer suggests it could have come from someone upset about management's plan to change sick leave and overtime policies. >> our time now 5:15. let's go back to sal. what is happening out there now, sal? >> still watching that problem in concord on treat boulevard near jones. concord police are on the scene of a car that ran into a pole. and unfortunately, when things are this light sometimes we get

beginning tuesday and also into wednesday this cool weather system moves in from the north. temperatures easily dropping off to the 15 to 20 degrees for tomorrow and into wednesday and there is a good bet of drizzle first thing wednesday morning so we could have some wet roadways especially near the coast and near parts of the bay that. once again for wednesday morning. for right now we do have this. we have offshore winds in place as a result elevated fire danger for the north bay hills and east bay hills, gusts approaching 30 and low humidity levels around 15 pes, we do not av any red flag warnings in place but still somewhat of a concern especially with an offshore wind event. a mine or one. for today beautiful near the immediate coastline, primarily 70s, the 80s, that orange contour, the red contour reflects the 90s later on today towards santa rosa, fairfield, concord and livermore. we will break it down coast

on saturday the popular on-line site shut down its adult services link, covering it with the word censor but so far no one has explained the move. craigslist has been the target of a group of 17 state attorneys general who says it allows prostitutes to advertise and that it could encourage human trafficking. >> right now our focus really is on craigslist. we are taking it one step at a time. we want to verify and confirm that they are shutting down because our focus really is on law enforcement within our borders and victims within the reach of this country's law enforcement activities. >> the craigslist has previously fought efforts to shut down the adult services section and it is not known if the closure is permanent. >> 5:26. authorities are using dental records to try to identify human remains found at the bottom of a cliff right near the golden gate bridge. search crews on friday repelled

600 feet down a cliff in the marin headlands to get to those remains, they were alerted after a kayaker saw a human skull. >> we don't know weather it was doesn'tal. it is precautionary for us to treat it as a crime scene. >> several bones were also found. investigators say that year to be those of an adult and been there a year. crews also found a fanny pack and a necklace. the authorities are analyzing all of that evidence and hoping to get a positive id on the remains. >> well, this morning the search continues for a missing woman in the east bay and this is no ordinary missing person's case. coming up what one local man is saying this morning bought the woman and the search. >> good morning. i am jade hernandez. a box no longer goes very far at a local san francisco mcdonalds.

time in this park which is near the intersection of 242 and oliverra road, where the search has been focused, he says people here remember here, they say she is often in and around this park and he too is worried about her welfare this morning. he didn't want to go open camera but says he remembered the search going on yesterday. let's show you a picture of amanda sloane, 48 100 pounds in a wheelchair and paralyzed from the waist down, police say she called 911 yesterday about 130 in the afternoon from the area of oliverra road and highway 242, which is where we are this morning. now sloane apparently told the chp she had fallen off her wheelchair and was having chest pains so they transferred her call to the fire department and they went in search of her. but that search came up empty. authorities tracked her cell phone call to make sure of the location and it went to bought this same area. so concerned for her welfare, they started a search. they actually set up a command post last night with 30

volunteers searching the area in and around oliverra road and highway 242. this area is most residential but there is a park around here with trails. they had the helicopter up. certainly at this point what they want to do is just make sure she is okay. they are not sure what happened to her after she made that call for help and so what they want to do is have anyone who has seen her, knows where she might be to certainly give them a call. live in concord, claudine wong, ktvu police. >> police are search for a man who shot and killed a man. we don't know the victim's name yet. police describe the suspect as a young african american man in his 20th wearing a white shirt and jeans. he was seen getting into a white or silver compact car. this by the way is vallejo's 11th homicide of the year.

in the park a suspected drunk driver is in jail this morning accused of crashing into a police vehicle. this happened yesterday when the driver, 27-year-old joshua hicks, skidded cross the intersection and crashed headon into a police suv. hicks then tried to drive away but he didn't get away and he was arrested. the officer was inside that uv was treated for injuries on his shoulder, arm and his back. >> some homeless people in san francisco say the move by a mcdonald's is to get rid of its -- to get rid of its dollar menu is leaving them hungry. jade hernandez joins us now from san francisco with more on the story. jade. >> reporter: good morning. a buck in your pocket can many dinner at a dollar menu at any local participating mcdonald's but at one specific san francisco mcdonald's here in haite ashbury a dollar can no longer get you a burger or fries. we are live in the

neighborhood. the san francisco chronicle reports this morning the franchise owner of this particular mcdonalds in this neighborhood took away the dollar menu about a month ago. homeless people in the area are upset, saying the menu was pulled to get them to go elsewhere. this particular mcdonalds has had problems though with the homeless. so management has locked bathroom doors and called police in the past. in addition to the mayor and several merchants are pushing a november ballot measure which would ban sitting or lying on sidewalks. the article states the franchise owner disagrees, saying she doesn't offer it anymore based on a number of factors none of which have anything to do with the homeless. a marketing director quoted in that same article says those factors can include customer demand and consumer price index. all of this comes down to nearly 2 quarters, the items on the dollar menu have only

reason 49 cents but for those pinching pennies, they say it is the difference between dinner and going hungry. back to you. >> 5:35. a special ceremony today by the martinez police department will honor an officer killed in the line off duty. two years ago officer paul starzic was shot and killed when he responded to a domestic disturbance call. well, in just a couple of hours from now a flag raising ceremony in his memory will begin right in front of city hall. fellow police officers will talk about his legacy and followed by a moment of silence. >> more and more farmers in sonoma county are taking advantage of open space deals to save their land. under the deal the county gives money to farmers to keep them from selling their land to developers for future projects. money for the farmland preservation comes from a quarter cent sales tax approved by voters 20 years ago and reauthorized in 2006, so far it

has helped conserve 83 thousand acres of farmland. well, this is a final day of the chp's annual labor day holiday crack down on the drunk driver, so far drunk driving arrests are up statewide. the chp has arrested 990 people since friday night, nearly 70 more than last year. here in the bay area they have maded 167 arrests, up slightly from last year. the crack down continues until midnight tonight. >> i was going to ask, sal you are not giving them the day off today, are you? >> no, unfortunately -- [overlapping speakers] [ inaudible ] >> -- normally drive the desk are back behind the crone victoria, so -- [overlapping speakers] [ inaudible ] >> -- for people and one of the reasons that things are so dangerous on this holiday weekend is the roads are wide open and people tend to speed quite frankly. this is -- [ inaudible ] >> -- easy out there we have

communities in vera cruz and tabasco. there is also concern about people who don't want to evacuate to protect their homes and possessions from robbers. in guatemala hope is fading for dozens of people buried in a landslide. the mud crashed down on a huge crowd as they tried to dig out two pickup trucks and a bus buried by an earlier landslide. there have been at least 15 landslides in the past two days from weeks of heavy rain. the death toll is now at 38 but there is fear it will go much higher. >> 5:45. the largest chunk of ice in north america is moving. this iceberg is almost twice the size of the city of san francisco. look at these pictures. it brokeoff a glacier in greenland a month ago and is now floating toward the arctic straits and if it gets out of there it could become a hazard
